Navigating the Future: the circular economy in yachting Barcolana Sea Summit, the event held in Trieste from 6 to 9 October, represents the first opening of multilateral dialogue on the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. The aim of the event was to create awareness of the need to establish a new relationship between man and sea, involving scientists, policy makers, businesses and civil society.

The 2021 edition, entitled "The sea is forever", proposed a rich program that touched on various aspects: from the economy of the sea to the professions connected to the nautical world, from green ports to the contribution that science and innovation can give to the sector.

As part of the session dedicated to the circular economy in boating, a workshop entitled "Navigating the Future: the circular economy in yachting" was held. With the participation of Area Science Park, the meeting provided reflections on the protection of the sea with a focus on the disposal and management of pleasure boats at the end of their life, which is a real environmental and socio-economic problem that is very significant. Area Science Park, together with the company Innovando Srl, is studying the economic and administrative feasibility of a national collective system, in the process of being technical, for the management of end-of-life boats that could be inspired by the EPR-Extended Producer Responsibility model referred to producers and distributors of pleasure boats.

The project was illustrated by Eng. Marcello Guaiana, Area Science Park technologist.
